Beginner Whitewater Multi-Day

Jumpstart your journey into the world of whitewater kayaking with our 2.5 day introductory program. This course is designed to build your confidence, teach essential skills, and prepare you for safe and enjoyable river adventures.

Class Highlights:

  • Duration: 2.5 Days (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon)

  • Location: Wildwood Outfitters 

  • Maximum: 8 participants

  • Minimum: 4 participants

  • Age: 8 and older (minors must bring an adult paddle pal).

  • Cost: $200 per participant

What You’ll Learn

Essential Gear Knowledge

  • Understand the purpose and proper use of kayaking gear, including paddles, helmets, PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices), and spray skirts.

  • Learn how to choose and care for your equipment to ensure safety and comfort.

Safety Fundamentals

  • Identify common water hazards, such as strainers, rocks, and hydraulics, and learn how to avoid them.

  • Gain confidence with wet exit techniques and rescue scenarios.

  • Practice group communication and teamwork to stay safe on the water.

Core Paddling Skills

  • Master basic paddling strokes for control, speed, and direction.

  • Build a solid foundation of balance and maneuverability in the kayak.

  • Learn techniques for entering and exiting your kayak safely, even in challenging conditions.

River Reading & Navigation

  • Develop the ability to "read" the river, identifying the safest and most efficient routes.

  • Learn to anticipate and adapt to mild currents, eddies, and small rapids.

Hands-On Practice

  • Apply your skills in a supportive environment, starting on flatwater and progressing to gentle Class 2 rapids.

  • Gain real-world experience in steering, turning, and navigating moving water.

Confidence & Enjoyment

  • Build confidence in your abilities through structured lessons and guided practice.

  • Experience the joy and thrill of whitewater kayaking with supportive instructors and fellow participants.


Day 1: On-Land Orientation
Location:

Duration: 3–4 hours

Get grounded in the fundamentals before stepping into the water.

  • Overview of kayaking gear and proper usage.

  • Understanding water hazards and how to navigate them safely.

  • Introduction to stroke techniques, paddle handling, and balance.

  • River-reading basics to prepare for real-world scenarios.

No water activities on Day 1—just confidence-building and preparation.

Day 2: Flatwater Skills
Location:
Calm River Stretch
Duration: 5–6 hours

Develop your core paddling skills in a calm, controlled environment.

  • Safe kayak entry and exit techniques.

  • Master basic strokes for control and direction.

  • Wet exit training to build water confidence.

  • Group activities and safety drills, including rescue techniques.

Day 3: Intro to Mild Moving Water
Location:
Gentle Class 2 River
Duration: 5–6 hours

Put your skills into practice on mild, flowing water.

  • Navigate gentle currents and small rapids with guidance.

  • Build teamwork and communication through group exercises.

  • Gain confidence in river safety practices.

  • Celebrate your achievements with a supportive and fun paddle!
